Sanmon, The Mountain Gate


This is the second gate into the temple precincts. It is built in aunique architectural style in which the roof has two tiers and is covered with thatch made of cypress bark. Inside it there are wooden images of Monju Bosatsu and four other Buddhist deities. The calligraphy on this name plaque was also written by an Imperial Prince. The gate is twenty meters high and was built in 1750. It is designated an Important Cultural Asset.
